Communaute Alimentaire de Lachine

ABOUT

Les P’tits Marchés de Lachine is an initiative of a group of Lachine community organizations (Le Groupe de Sécurité Alimentaire de Lachine and Concert’Action Lachine) that collaborate with local sustainable farmers to bring fresh, affordable, organic food to areas of Lachine considered food deserts.

WHAT IS A FOOD DESERT?

Food deserts are geographic areas where locals don’t have access to affordable and nutritious fresh foods within a close proximity. Often, residents rely on convenience stores for food. These shops often have limited shelf space and offer less healthy options than a grocery store or vegetable market.

GOOD FOOD, THAT IS ULTRA-LOCAL AND AFFORDABLE

Much of the produce sold at the mobile mini-markets come from two ultra-local and sustainable urban farms in Lachine. La Ferme Urbaine Duff-Court and le jardin du Triangle Fleuri both grow fruits and vegetables for the community without the use of any chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. Les P’tits Marchés de Lachine also source foods from certified organic farms such as Les Jardins Carya and D3Pierres who are located less than 35 mins from Montreal and Shiana Hayes Farm less that 60 km from Montreal. This short circuit reduces travel emissions, refrigeration time and packaging that would be required to keep foods coming from far away from spoiling.

MISSION

The goal of these mini-markets is to provide all members of the community access to nutritious seasonal foods that are locally and sustainably grown at affordable prices. These markets are open to everyone, and proceeds from the markets stay local and help alleviate food insecurity in Lachine and improve the environmental, social and economic issues in the local food system. When you shop at the markets, you help your community !
